Poetic Medicine: A Journal of Healing

For the past two years I have been on the Advisory Board of the Institute for Poetic Medicine, based in Mountain View, California. Other members of the Advisory Board include Coleman Barks, a poet and translator of Rumi; John Graham-Pole, MD, of Shands Hospital's Arts in Medicine programme at the University of Florida in Gainsville, Florida; and Naomi Shihab-Nye, a poet, songwriter and novelist based in San Antonio, Texas.

Summer 2007 has seen the debut of the first issue of Poetic Medicine: A Journal of Healing. Founder of the Institute for Poetic Medicine, John Fox, writing from California, comments the journal is intended to quot;energize your connection to the healing spirit of poetry" and "offer you access to a creative community committed to compassion, kindness and peace."

The journal is one strategy of the Institute for Poetic Medicine's mission "to awaken soulfulness in the human voice." This first issue of Poetic Medicine: A Journal of Healing features a review of an excellent new film called "Healing Words, Poetry and the Art of Medicine."

This 55 minute documentary was produced by David Watts, MD, Joan Baranow, Victoria Chaban and Jamie Cavenaugh. It follows the path of poets, physicians and patients as they explore the power of the written word.

A pre-release viewing and party for the documentary was held at the University of California, San Francisco on January 22, 2007.

I was able to attend the pre-release and look forward to informing you about its general release later this year.

This new journal features a welcome range of articles and is worth checking out. Edited by Paula Zimlicki, the Director of Communications and Outreach for the Institute for Poetic Medicine, Poetic Medicine: A Journal of Healing, catches the eye, heart and mind.

"By making us stop for a moment, poetry gives us an opportunity to think about ourselves as human beings on this planet and what we mean to each other."
